Task 1
As we begin our new inquiry topic about how many aspects of past civilisations are present today you need to start activating your prior knowledge. This week think about these questions:

What past civilisations do you know of?
What do you know about them?
Which aspects of or systems in our modern world come from the past?
(systems might include Political, Transportation, Time/calendar, Military, religion, Agriculture, trade, architecture or arts and crafts, communication)
Think about the questions yourself Discuss your answers and ideas with your parents or other adults at home Record your thoughts and understandings
This week we will be starting to discuss our new inquiry topic. As a class we will be looking at Eygpt together before you choose your own inquiry topic. Watch this video together with a buddy until 5 mins and 20 secs (5.20).
1. What is the Nile and why was it so important for the Egyptians?
2. How did the Nile help with the Egyptians agriculture system?
3. How did the Nile help with the Egyptians calendar system?
4. How did the Nile help with the Egyptians writing system?
5. How did the Nile help with the Eygptians transportation system? 6. What was special about the architecture system of the Egyptians?
Think about the questions with your buddy Discuss your answers and ideas with your buddy Record your thoughts and understandings
Task 3 Documentary
We will watch a documentary about ancient Egypt and create a mind map which shows all of the systems of the Egyptians. You will need to take notes from the video and add information to your mind map.
Research
Next you will be put into groups and you will need to research a given system. See the groups below.
You will need to collect information from videos, websites and books and put information onto a shared google doc in your topic folder. This doc should be shared with your group.
Referencing
You will need to reference any information you find by saying:
Book - title, author, page
Website - URL, name of site, name of page
Video - name of video, URL of video
Presenting information
You will now need to present your information to the class so they can learn about your system. Chose the best way to present information.
Task 4 We will now be starting to look at a wider range of ancient civilisations and find out how their systems worked. Using the website ancientcivilizations, I want you to explore the systems of several past civilisations.
At the start of the website pick a 'theme' eg: building, writing, technology and then look at this system in each of the past civilisations on the interactive map.
For each theme write down: 1. In which civilizations can we see evidence of this aspect? 2. Why do you think this is an important aspect of civilization? 3. Can you think of examples of this aspect in modern society? 4. How has the aspect developed in modern day society?
Think about the questions with your buddy
Discuss your answers and ideas with your buddy
Record your thoughts and understandings
Task 5 As we begin to wrap up our inquiry topic consider these questions:
1. How has your life been influenced by elements of past civilizations? 2. Is the influence always positive? 3. Which elements of our current society do you think will be influential in the future?
Think about the questions yourself
Discuss your answers and ideas with your parents or other adults at home
